Introduction

Downtown Wichita Falls, Texas, in the mid 1940’s was a bustling metropolis for a boy of 7 just away from the farm and ranch community where he was born. My father, a cook and cowboy by trade, had just started as one of the first cooks for the Casa Manana restaurant in 1947. He moved us to an apartment on Ohio Street, right across from the Gem Theater, between 7th and 8th Streets. It’s here that we would stay for the next three years. The Gem Theater became a magic palace for a young mind. But it had to share that distinction with the rest of the magic that was Wichita Falls. I attended San Jacinto and Carrigan elementary schools, as well as Reagan Junior High, and belonged to the Boys Club on 6th Street. Please join, and share your stories and pictures through a Guest Blog, of early Wichita Falls - or your home town. Contact me at fadingshadows40@gmail.com or leave a comment. We could use old pictures of movie houses, drive-in theaters, and other nostalgic pictures related to our youths.

The Marvel Gang

The Marvel Gang: I loved reading all the Marvel superheroes back in the day, my favorite being The Marvel Family: Captain Marvel, Mary Marvel, and Captain Marvel, Jr. A shame Mary Marvel isn’t featured on this poster (sigh).

Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel: Here is another great Captain Marvel comic book edition of The World's Mightiest Marvel. Although I discovered Superman and Batman first, when Captain Marvel came along I was hooked. My favorite series was The Marvel Family, however, which featured all the Marvel family in one comic book. It was fun being a kid back then.

Shazam - The Marvel Family

SHAZAM – The Marvel Family. As most of this Blog’s viewers know by now, The Marvel Family was one of my favorite comic book series back in the day. Although I preferred color panels, this black & white illustration is also very nice. Just thought I would share.

The Marvel Family

The Marvel Family, The World’s Mightiest Mortals: This was one of my favorite comic book series back in the day. Although Superman and Batman were my first comic book superheroes, I quickly became a fan of The Marvel Family.

Comic Book Super Heroes

Comic Book Super Heroes: I don’t think they got any better than these. Captain Marvel, Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. Yes, I read them all when I got the chance. Oh, there were literally hundreds of others, but poor kids had to be picky when I was young. I usually bought half price comic books at the magazine exchange in Wichita Falls when I had a dime to spare, then after reading them I swapped other kids for comic books I hadn’t read. We couldn’t afford to be collectors back then.

Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel was my second favorite of the comic book super heroes, following closely after Batman. Unfortunately, he was forced out the comics by DC. Later, DC brought him back under their own banner, however.
